Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has hit out at claims suggesting the Premier League strugglers are looking at terminating Kalvin Phillips’ loan spell in January.
A ‘Football Insider’ insinuated that the Tractor Boys would ‘consider sending’ the former Leeds United midfielder back to Man City early ‘if he cannot demonstrate that he is up to speed’. It was suggested that Phillips’ “head is still at Leeds” and that he wants an Elland Road return.
When quizzed on the Phillips speculation following Town’s dramatic 4-3 defeat to Brentford yesterday, McKenna said: “What can I say on that? Proper, proper nonsense.
“I learned quite a while ago in football that you can write something online and it circulates and gets picked up by quite a lot of media outlets and then it becomes a story.
“It’s absolute nonsense. There have been no conversations of the like and I think it’s a real, real shame. He had a very good game.”
Things have not worked out for Phillips since the England international left United in the summer of 2022. He has failed to win over Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and was loaned out to West Ham United in the second half of last season. Phillips struggled to produce his best form for the Hammers and cement a regular place in the starting XI.
After two high-profile moves, Phillips headed to top flight new boys Ipswich in the most recent transfer window. He has made seven starts across all competitions since joining the Tractor Boys on loan until the end of the campaign.
McKenna’s side sit in 17th position, having failed to win any of their opening nine matches.
