Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets earned a much-needed win against the Houston Texans on Thursday, but the Jets quarterback admits that things looked bleak at halftime.
The Jets were shut out in the first half, having a touchdown taken off the board when rookie wide receiver Malachi Corley dropped the ball just before crossing the goal line on what would have been a 19-yard touchdown. Instead they ended the half down 7-0.
Rodgers also struggled in the first half as the Jets offense ground to a halt, racking up just 69 total yards while the quarterback was sacked twice. They came alive in the second half, scoring three touchdowns en route to a 21-13 win, but after the game Rodgers had a blunt assessment of the team’s early struggles.
“I was terrible,” Rodgers told reporters after the game. “You know, we had a touchdown called back, taken off the board, silly play.”
Rodgers said the team maintained good energy going into halftime, and the positivity paid off in the second half as they began to move the ball against the aggressive Texans’ defense. The Jets scored on all three of their second-half possessions, driving 70, 70, and 80 yards.
Rodgers ended the game completing 15-of-18 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns.
“I’m proud of the way we responded in the second half,” he said.
“I played about as bad as I could in the first half and knew it had to get better from there.” The win moved the Jets to 3-6, keeping alive their slimming playoff hopes.
