Pittsburgh Steelers make defensive splash, acquire edge rusher Preston Smith

The Pittsburgh Steelers are trading for Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Preston Smith, according to multiple reports and confirmed to PennLive. Smith will be traded to the Steelers for just a seventh-round pick. Sources described Smith as a direct replacement for DeMarvin Leal.

Smith, an NFL veteran, will play a little bit on the inside and outside for the team, giving them even more depth on their defensive line. He has 2.5 sacks this season for the Packers, and has 68.5 sacks throughout his career.

The Steelers will have Smith under contract for two seasons if they want to keep him in the fold, but his deal has no guaranteed money left and could be cut after the season.

Smith had 8 sacks in 2023 and has not had fewer than eight sacks since 2020. Despite being 31 years old, he is a productive player and starter for the Packers. Green Bay will get more reps for former first-round pick Lukas Van Ness with the trade, while the Steelers will take on Smith’s contract and add him into a quality depth rotation role for the group.
