Pittsburgh Steelers activate two players before Commanders game

The Pittsburgh Steelers have activated wide receiver Ben Skowronek and linebacker Tyler Matakevich from injured reserve. Both players returned to the 53-man roster after missing multiple games with injuries. As a corresponding move to free up two spots, the Steelers released safety Terrell Edmunds and running back Jonathan Ward.

Both Skowronek and Matakevich suffered injuries in the team’s win over the Denver Broncos, but practiced fully this week. They were initially listed as questionable but were upgraded on Saturday to have no designation, meaning that both players will end up playing.

Matakevich and Skowronek are unlikely to have plentiful roles on defense and offense, but both are core special teamers for the Steelers. Skowronek slots in as a gunner across from James Pierre while Matakevich figures to end up as one of the Steelers’ stalwarts on their coverage units.

Pittsburgh will replace a slew of special teams snaps with older players who are coming back from injuries after cutting Rodney Williams, Edmunds, and Ward.
