Mets’ Spending Spree Predicted to Surpass $1 Billion Mark This Offseason

The New York Mets shocked the baseball world by signing outfielder Juan Soto away from the New York Yankees for a record-breaking $765 million contract. President of baseball operations David Stearns still has items to complete on his offseason to-do list. Does it include re-signing first baseman Pete Alonso and starting pitcher Sean Manaea?

Alonso has been a staple in the Mets’ lineup since his 2019 National League Rookie of the Year campaign. The 2024 season was a bit of a disappointment for the Polar Bear. It included his lowest home run (34) and RBI (88) totals during a full year, but he’d still be a great slugger to pencil in behind Soto.

Manaea landed in Queens last winter on a two-year, $28 million deal. He was the only player to land a multi-year contract from Stearns during his first offseason in charge of the Mets. It included an opt-out clause, which the southpaw exercised after posting a 12-6 record with a 3.47 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 184 strikeouts in 181 2/3 innings.

Will these two find new homes in 2025 or will they re-sign with the Mets? Just Baseball’s Ryan Finkelstein provided updated predictions for MLB’s top remaining free agents. He has both Alonso and Manaea staying in Queens on multi-year deals.

Finkelstein increased his original contract prediction for Manaea from four years at $76 million to four years at $84 million. His original prediction for Alonso didn’t change, as he still thinks he’ll land a six-year, $140 million guarantee.

That’d be another $224 million after already dropping more than $840 million on Soto, Frankie Montas, Clay Holmes and Griffin Canning. If Stearns re-signs Manaea and Alonso to deals close to these figures, the Mets will surpass the $1 billion mark in total player salary commitments this offseason.
