Rotherham United have sacked Steve Evans following inability to keep up with the pace of Birmingham City as details emerge.

Rotherham United have parted ways with manager Steve Evans after they failed to live up to their pre-season billing of Birmingham City’s title rivals.

The Millers were relegated from the Championship alongside Blues last season but the two teams have experienced very different fortunes.

Whilst Blues are riding high at the top of League One and on the brink of an immediate return to the Championship, Rotherham are languishing in 16th place after 38 games and are resigned to another season in the third tier.

A 4-0 home defeat to relegation contenders Crawley Town on Saturday proved to be the final straw for Evans at the New York Stadium.

A club statement reads: “Rotherham United can confirm that, following a meeting between the Chairman and Manager this morning, the club have parted company with First Team Manager Steve Evans together with Paul Raynor, Gary Mills, and Ian Pledger, with immediate effect.

“Steve was re-appointed in April last year, taking charge of 50 games in all competitions during his most recent tenure.

“Everyone at Rotherham United would like to thank Steve, Paul, and their coaching team for all their efforts and wish them well in their future endeavours.”
