Bruins Blow Away Hurricanes; End Losing Skid With Hat Trick From Pastrnak

After more than three weeks of misery, the Boston Bruins ended their suffering Saturday night at TD Garden, picking up a 5-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes to end their 10 game losing streak.

David Pastrnak led the charge for the Bruins, whule the 21st hat trick of his career and finishing the game with five total points.

Pastrnak’s first two points of the night came on the first two goals of the game that gave Boston a 2-0 advantage at the end of the opening frame.

Morgan Geekie put Boston on the board at 18:49 of the period when his wrist shot from above the face-off circles snuck through Hurricanes goalie Frederik Andersen for his 28th goal of the season. Less than a minute later, Elias Lindholm tacked on another tally, cleaning up a loose puck in the crease for his 14th goal of the year.

Pastrnak had the primary assist on each of those goals and then decided to score one of his own to add to Boston’s lead in the middle frame.

After collecting the puck directly in front of the Carolina net, Pastrnak carried it out along the goal line and patiently waited before firing a shot through a small opening between Andersen’s shoulder and the near post.

As if he hadn’t toyed with Andersen enough already, Pastrnak made the Carolina netminder look foolish when he beat him again to start the third period

With Boston entering the attacking zone off the rush, Pastrnak made a beeline toward the slot, where he caught the puck out of midair before batting it into the back of the net to score his second goal of the night, and he wasn’t done yet.

Pastrnak capped off the hat trick with his 40th goal of the season, making the fourth year in a row in which he’s hit that benchmark.

With Pastrnak taking care of the offense at the opposite end of the ice, Jeremy Swayman finished the night with 37 saves of 38 shots in goal for the Bruins. Carolina didn’t put a puck past him until there was under a minute left in the game with a goal from Justin Robidas.

The win improved the Bruins’ record to 31-37-9. They’ll visit the Buffalo Sabres tomorrow night.
