Mavericks’ worst playoff fear may be coming true after alarming injury rumor

The Dallas Mavericks have gone through one of the strangest and most heartbreaking seasons in franchise history this year, as they made two heartbreaking trades at the trade deadline and have suffered countless devastating injuries that have significantly altered their trajectory ahead of the playoffs.

Ever since the Luka Doncic trade, anything that could have possibly gone wrong has, with the worst blow coming when Kyrie Irving tore his ACL at the beginning of March. This ended Dallas’ chances of making a deep playoff run with Irving and Anthony Davis leading the way, and without Irving, their guard depth has been horrendous.

They haven’t had enough consistent play out of the point guard position for weeks, but one of the bright spots since Irving went down has been Brandon Williams. His strong play caused Nico Harrison to convert his two-way deal to a standard contract last week, and he is looking like someone who will be a key piece of Jason Kidd’s rotation for years to come. Williams has been an excellent finisher, scorer, and an underrated playmaker, but disaster struck on Sunday afternoon when Williams went down with an oblique strain in a matinee matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Mavs may be without breakout guard for play-in game on Wednesday

This was a game in which Kidd was strategically resting players to give the Mavericks their best shot at coming out of this game injury-free, and they still ended up falling victim to the injury bug as Williams did not finish the game after getting injured. While Williams was set to undergo an MRI on Monday in Dallas, no results have been provided by the Mavericks or any reporters yet, and one rumor surrounding the new injury is not looking promising for Williams’s availability for the Mavs’ play-in game against the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night.

DLLS Mavs’ Marc Stein talked about Williams’s injury on Monday’s show, and from what he’s heard about the injury, this isn’t just something where he for sure will be returning and playing in the Play-In Tournament later this week. There is a real chance that he misses Dallas’ game against the Kings.

“I heard enough concern coming out of the Memphis game that they’re worried about it,” Stein reported.

Any internal worry about Williams potentially missing the Mavericks’ first play-in game should concern fans, and we should know more about his availability for Wednesday night as this week goes on. The Mavericks need Williams back in the lineup badly, and if he can’t play, the team will be forced to heavily rely upon Spencer Dinwiddie and Naji Marshall in these minutes.

Mavs fans will be thrilled if Dinwiddie can replicate his postseason performance from 2022 with Dallas this time around, but regardless, fans couldn’t wait to see what Williams was going to look like in a playoff environment. Williams has drawn some comparisons to Irving recently, and while fans were hoping to see if he could recapture some of Irving’s postseason magic beginning on Wednesday, now they’re just hoping he gets the chance.
