Roman Anthony is set to return to action for the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday after a brief scare sidelined him for two games.
Manager Alex Cora confirmed Anthony’s return ahead of the series finale against the Kansas City Royals, according to CBS Sports. The 21-year-old rookie was held out as a precaution due to mid-back tightness, but the team is confident he is ready to go.
Anthony was originally set to bat third Monday night before being scratched moments before first pitch. The sudden change, announced without immediate explanation, sent fans scrambling for clarity. With Boston holding a lead in the Wild Card race, questions swirled — was Anthony sick, injured or facing something more serious?
Only after the game did the picture come into focus. Anthony felt tightness while stretching during warmups and immediately called for the training staff.
“Everything felt normal all day,” he said postgame Monday. “I felt something as I was stretching on the line. I figured we’d be cautious with it.”
Cora opted to sit him again Tuesday to avoid pushing things too quickly. In his absence, Masataka Yoshida returned to the lineup and contributed a hit and a walk in Boston’s 6-2 win, the team’s sixth straight.
One night earlier, Brayan Bello pitched deep into the game and got offensive support from Jarren Duran and Rob Refsnyder in an 8-5 victory.
Anthony enters Wednesday with a .283 average, 45 hits, 27 runs, 19 RBIs and two homers, including a recent walk-off against the Houston Astros.
