Cleveland Browns announced their very first 53-man roster: Who is in and who is out

The Cleveland Browns have announced their first 53-man roster for the 2025 regular season ahead of their Week 1 matchup against Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, Sept. 7.

Before Tuesday’s deadline the team announced the following roster cuts to get down to the final configuration:

WR Chase Cota
WR Kaden Davis
S Christopher Edmonds
CB LaMareon James
WR Kisean Johnson
RB Ahmani Marshall
WR Cade McDonald (injury designation)
RB Pierre Strong Jr. (injury designation)
T Kilian Zierer

Earlier Tuesday, the team announced the release of veteran wide receiver Diontae Johnson after he failed to stand out in a receiver group desperate for an experienced pass catcher opposite WR1 Jerry Jeudy. Johnson signed with the Browns during the offseason in an effort to rehabilitate a career that has gone in the wrong direction since making the Pro Bowl in 2021.

With Johnson’s departure, an opportunity has opened for training camp standout Gage Larvadian. Along with impressing during camp, Larvadian caught 9 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown during Cleveland’s three preseason games.

However the biggest news from the initial roster comes from the kicking position. Absent from the roster is Dustin Hopkins, whose contract was terminated by the team. In steps former UFL and Syracuse kicker Andre Szmyt, for now.

Szmyt did everything he was asked in the preseason for a guy looking to upend a roster spot from a 10-year vet with a hefty contract in Hopkins. Szmyt connected on all three of his field goal attempts as well as his lone extra point attempt during exhibition play.

For Hopkins, it’s a bitter end to his tenure in Cleveland that saw him earn a three-year contract extension just over a year ago before the 2024 season. Hopkins struggled last season, connecting on just 66.7% of his attempts (18-27). He also missed three extra point attempts last season (17-20), plus one additional miss in the 2025 preseason.
