Sunderland player injured with national side – Key defender set for tests

Sunderland’s Omar Alderete picked up an injury in Paraguay’s 2-0 friendly defeat to South Korea on Tuesday.

The centre-back started for the national team in their 2-2 friendly draw against Japan and kept his place in the playing XI against South Korea.

On Tuesday, the Sunderland player was replaced by Manchester United defender Diego León in the 81st minute.

Versus in Paraguay report the 28-year-old came off the pitch due to physical discomfort. Radio Ñandutí took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share an update on the defender’s situation. Journalist Angel Elián reported Alderete has a ‘posterior thigh muscle strain’.

Paraguayan Radio station Monumental AM 1080 also took to X to report Alderete had to leave the pitch against South Korea due to discomfort.

Sunderland expected to carry out further tests once the player returns to the club. This should help them determine the extent of damage and whether he has to spend time on the sidelines.

Alderete joined Sunderland from Getafe in August. He came off the bench against West Ham United and played every minute in the league for Régis Le Bris’ side since then. If he were to be sidelined, it’ll be a blow for the Black Cats.
