Daniel Farke was under intense pressure at Leeds heading into the clash against Chelsea on Wednesday night.
Four consecutive defeats had caused Leeds to slip to 18th in the Premier League, and fans were growing annoyed as the German persisted with ineffective tactics – while also annoying them with his comments in press conferences.
A switch to a 3-5-2 saw Leeds steamroll Chelsea and secure a 3-1 win at Elland Road, changing the narrative around Daniel Farke completely. Is the victory enough to put the 49ers at ease, however? Not according to BBC Sport.
Daniel Farke remains under pressure at Leeds United despite win over Chelsea
Sami Mokbel of the BBC has now said: “Sources have told BBC Sport that the process of identifying potential candidates to replace Farke has begun. It is not unusual practice for clubs to plot a succession plan for their managerial position regardless of the incumbent’s job security.
“But Leeds’ poor form, which left them in the relegation zone before Wednesday’s win, has placed significant pressure on Farke – serving to amplify the club’s movement towards pinpointing possible successors to the German.”
Before the visit of Chelsea, TalkSPORT claimed that Leeds had shortlisted Gary O’Neil as a potential appointment.
The same outlet had already stated that Brendan Rodgers and Ange Postecoglou were also being considered by the 49ers after leaving Celtic and Nottingham Forest respectively.
Sky Sports believe the switch to a 3-5-2 has given the 49ers some hope over Farke, but Mokbel’s information makes it sound like he still has work to do.
A win for Leeds United over Liverpool could give Daniel Farke some assurance
The Guardian recently wrote that defeats to both Chelsea and Liverpool at Elland Road this week would likely see Farke sacked.
He has overcome one of those hurdles, but with Mokbel insisting that the 49ers are still unsure, the 49-year-old might also need to defeat Liverpool to buy himself some proper breathing room.
However, that could actually prove to be an easier game than the Chelsea clash, with Liverpool on a dismal run of nine defeats in their last 14 games across all competitions.
