Marco Silva says silverware is the club’s goal as Fulham prepare for their Carabao Cup quarter-final against Newcastle.

Fulham reached the semi-final of the competition two years ago but were beaten by Liverpool over two legs.

The Whites have been a round away from a trip to Wembley in the past three seasons, falling short each time, but boss Silva is looking to his side to go one better.

He regards the cup competitions as a chance for clubs like Fulham to taste glory.

“Nothing is impossible in football, but we have to be realistic. The best way for you to achieve something, the cups are the way,” he said.

“We have been trying to create this mentality inside the club, because we did achieve it for the first time ever – the semi-finals two years ago in this competition.

“Last season, the quarter-final, we had the cup, like we had in the first season as well in the FA Cup, and we want to go again.”

Fulham will have to be at their best on Wednesday against a Newcastle side who will be desperate to bounce back after a derby defeat against rivals Sunderland at the weekend.

The Carabao Cup holders scored a 90th-minute winner to beat Fulham at St James’ Park in the Premier League this season.

Silva added: “When you are able to play semi-finals, of course, you have to think about it (winning a trophy).

“Let’s go to play each stage of the competition with full ambition. And of course, silverware is always in our mind.

“Such a historic club that doesn’t have a title in this type of competition; of course it’s something that if you can achieve, you can imagine how the fans are going to feel and it can give a really good statement to the supporters.”
