Sunderland have made a deadline-day swoop for Nilson Angulo, with the Anderlecht winger set to replace Simon Adingra at the Stadium of Light.
Adingra is on the verge of completing a move to Monaco on a season-long loan deal, with terms of the deal set to include a clause that will enable the Ligue 1 club to complete a permanent transfer for around €17m in the summer.
Sunderland only sanctioned Adingra’s departure because they were confident of being able to replace the former Brighton winger with a new addition of their own, and that has taken them to Angulo.
The Black Cats’ recruitment team, led by director of football Florent Ghisolfi, have agreed terms with Anderlecht over Angulo, and are in the process of beginning an overseas medical for the 22-year-old Ecuador international.
Sunderland will pay an initial fee of around £15m to sign Angulo, with a further £2.5m of potential add-ons included as part of the deal.
Provided there are no unforeseen problems, the Sunderland hierarchy are confident of being able to complete a deal before the transfer window closes at 7pm this evening.
Angulo left his native Ecuador in 2022 after beginning his career in his homeland with LDU Quito.
He joined Anderlecht on an initial five-year deal when he first moved to Europe, but has subsequently signed an extension that was due to run to 2029.
He has spent the last three-and-a-half seasons playing in Belgium’s Pro League and has racked up 89 senior appearances for Anderlecht, scoring eight goals.
He has won 12 senior international caps with Ecuador, where he is a team-mate of recent Middlesbrough signing Jeremy Sarmiento.
