Silva annoyed by Fulham’s poor display in cup exit

Marco Silva insisted Fulham had themselves to blame after going out of the FA Cup, despite having what seemed a perfectly good goal disallowed.

Ross Stewart’s stoppage-time penalty gave Championship side Southampton a 1-0 victory at Craven Cottage, taking them through to the quarter-finals.

It came after Fulham had two goals disallowed – the first in bizarre circumstances.

Saints keeper Daniel Peretz bungled an attempted quick goal-kick and the ball struck team-mate Ryan Manning before falling to Rodrigo Muniz, who found the net.

But the goal was ruled out because the ball was moving when Peretz kicked it.

Later, Timothy Castagne thought he had scored when he poked in the loose ball after Andersen’s header was saved, but the defender was offside.

Referring to the first incident, Whites boss Silva said: “For me it is a goal. But I don’t want to go in that direction.

“To go in that direction, to talk about that moment, looks like I am finding excuses, and I don’t like that.

“I prefer to look for the real picture of the game. Yes, for me it’s a goal, but all the other things looking for ourselves and myself as a manager of this team, we should have done much better.”

Fulham will return to Premier League action with a game away to Nottingham Forest next Sunday.
