“Shot themselves in the foot” – Fulham face paying extra €10m for Ricardo Pepi

Fulham’s pursuit of PSV Eindhoven striker Ricardo Pepi could cost them an extra €10m after they recently pulled out of the deal.

That’s according to the #DoneDeal podcast from Voetbal Primeur, who explain that Fulham have shot themselves in the foot over the American.

Fulham walk away from the deal.

Fulham walked away from a deal for Pepi earlier this month despite finally reaching an agreement with PSV Eindhoven for the 23-year-old.

That deal had been ongoing since January, when Fulham tried to sign Pepi late in the window. PSV resisted at the time, but negotiations continued after the January transfer window closed.

A €40m deal was on the cards before Fulham eventually walked away over a disagreement with PSV over when they would take responsibility for the striker.

Pepi was left ‘severely disappointed’ after travelling to Craven Cottage for a medical.

“Fulham have shot themselves in the foot.”

Now, according to the podcast, the decision to cancel could come back to haunt Fulham. They believe Ricardo Pepi could end up costing more than €40m.

“Fulham have shot themselves in the foot,” they said.

“If they still want him and Pepi scores another four in the Eredivisie now and four at the World Cup later, they could pay fifty million euros.”

PSV stand to benefit

From PSV’s perspective, the collapse can be considered a win. Ricardo Pepi remains a valuable player. If he delivers at the end of the season, especially at the World Cup, the Dutch will be in a commanding negotiating position.

On the other hand, if he struggles on the big stage, that price will undoubtedly fall.

Fulham, meanwhile, are seemingly willing to take the risk. Marco Silva’s side will only do the deal on their own terms. PSV’s efforts to change that have not worked.

Currently, the two clubs are engaged in a battle of wills. Pepi appears destined to leave PSV this summer either way. But the next few months will determine when and for what price.
