New Rotherham United boss gives verdict on ‘special’ Leeds United loanee Harry Gray

New Rotherham United boss Lee Clark has branded Leeds United loanee Harry Gray as a “special player” with “some career to look forward to”.

The 17-year-old played the full 90 minutes in both of the club’s Easter weekend fixtures, featuring on the left wing in a goalless draw against Stevenage and a 1-0 defeat to bottom League One outfit Port Vale.

Gray had returned to Leeds in March in order to receive treatment on a hamstring issue and in the interim, third-tier strugglers Rotherham sacked Matt Hamshaw, who had brought the Whites striker in on loan in January. Naturally, such a move can bring concerns about game time.

Clark was unveiled as the new Millers manager on the same day as Hamshaw’s exit, and he has since had a chance to work with Gray, who has impressed him. “Harry Gray, what a special player he is,” Clark said, as per the Rotherham Advertiser.

“He’s only 17. Some of the touches and some of the flicks were amazing. He’s got awareness and desire. He’s got some career to look forward to.”

Gray has six games left to play at Rotherham before his loan spell ends. The Yorkshire club are bound for League Two, sitting 11 points from safety, having not won since February – their sole victory in 12 matches.

Under former manager Hamshaw, Gray played three games on the left flank but mainly played as the central striker. In his two games under Clark so far, Gray has featured on the left – his four shots on goal being off target.

This is reflective of the Rotherham side as a whole, having failed to score in six of their past seven matches and any of their last four. This is Gray’s first experience of prolonged senior football, having only made a brief cameo debut for Leeds 12 months ago.

He signed his maiden professional contract shortly after turning 17 in October. In his 14 games for Rotherham, he has scored twice, these strikes coming in the first four games of his stay.
