Yankees’ Anthony Volpe reveals what he’s ‘most excited’ for with rehab assignment

New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe won a Gold Glove in his rookie year in the Majors in 2023.

Both the organization and the fanbase were banking on him to become the next great Yankees shortstop, but it hasn’t turned out that way. Regardless, New York’s plan is for Volpe to take over shortstop duties from Jose Caballero when he returns from the injured list.

Volpe underwent offseason surgery for a partially torn labrum and will start a rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset on Tuesday.

“My family is happy,” Volpe said. “But I’m so excited to just play. I’m probably the most excited I’ve ever been, just having that perspective,” Volpe told MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. “It doesn’t matter. I’ll play anywhere. I’ll do anything. So it’s going to be great.”

Volpe was in the dugout for the Yankees’ previous series against the Tampa Bay Rays. His team suffered a three-game sweep.

“I missed the guys,” Volpe said. “You watch on TV, and you get texts after a game, but to be with everyone in the fight and everything — it’s a helpless feeling at the same time, but that’s what you miss the most, the camaraderie,” Volpe told Hoch.

Hoch reports that general manager Brian Cashman said that Volpe will receive about 55 at-bats in the minors before he returns to the Yankees. The 24-year-old hit just .212/.272/.391 with an 83 OPS+ and 19 home runs in 153 games in 2025.
