Leon Draisaitl’s agent Jiri Poner gives Oilers ULTIMATUM on contract offer saying ‘Leon holds all the trump cards’

Edmonton Oilers star forward Leon Draisaitl ’s contract with the team takes a controversial turn, as his agent Jiri Poner sends a subtle warning on social media. According to Poner, a decision should be made “by the end of August” or Draisaitl may look out for better options in the NHL.

The conversation took place during Poner’s interview with Germany’s Eishockey News’ Michael Bauer. Last month during a conference, the forward mentioned how much he loves being an Oiler and if possible wants to keep it that way.

His contract will be up after the 2024-25 season, and he’ll land in the trade market in case the team and the player do not come to new contract terms. Poner feels “Leon holds all the trump cards,” as he’s been playing with an $8 million AAV after signing an $8-year $68 million contract.

There’s no rush yet, but either it happens quickly, i.e. by the end of August, or it doesn’t work out at all. It will also become clear whether Edmonton wants him or not. Jiri Poner as per X.

While NHL insider Elliotte Friedman speculates that the Oilers are willing to slow-play any contract extension talks, Leon Draisaitl’s agent wishes for a quick solution to put minds at ease. Poner seems confident that both parties will receive a good deal that’ll satisfy them equally, although it’s quick to say anything.

Leon Draisaitl’s agent Jiri Poner gives reasons behind his confidence on Oilers contract offer

Leon Draisaitl’s agent Jiri Poner is confident they’ll reach an agreement that’ll satisfy both parties. To further justify his point, he noted how Draisaitl’s free agency would hurt the organization as they “would lose far too much,” and it may also affect Connor McDavid’s contract extension.

He questions what McDavid will do when his contract expires a year later seeing how “Edmonton has already given up his best friend?” The team can’t afford to lose McDavid as he’s one of the core players of the team.

…(Draisaitl) has been playing at least 30 percent below his value for three years. But that’s not a complaint. There will always be rumors until Leon signs. Jiri Poner as per Zach Laing of Oilers Nation.

On the other hand, Edmonton Oilers CEO Jeff Jackson said they still have a year so the organization will work things out before that. He also expressed confidence saying “We want to keep this group together” and obviously Draisaitl is a big part of it. Fans will now be waiting until August as said by Poner to see if a contract extension is possible or not.
