Everton are hopeful of winning the race for Lyon centre-half Jake O’Brien, according to Alan Nixon.
The journalist added via his Patreon page on Sunday (July 7) that the Toffees could face some competition from Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest and West Ham.
Nonetheless, the Merseyside club believe the 23-year-old defender would prefer a move to Goodison Park, although Lyon’s £30millon asking price could be a hurdle.
Everton are said to instead rate O’Brien at around £20m.
Everton target Jake O’Brien in busy summer at Goodison Park
Everton have had a surprisingly busy summer, actively strengthening their squad despite financial challenges and rumours of key player exits.
They’ve brought in Tim Iroegbunam from Aston Villa, extended Jack Harrison’s loan and have more recently added forward Iliman Ndiaye from Marseille.
Now, they’re focusing on defence and are optimistic about signing O’Brien from Lyon.
The 23-year-old is valued at £30m, and Everton are negotiating hard, competing with Nottingham Forest and West Ham for his signature.
This proactive approach is a stark contrast to what many expected after last season’s financial troubles and PSR breaches.
Only Lewis Dobbin and Ben Godfrey have left, raising essential funds, while key players like Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite remain at Goodison Park for now.
Despite the challenges, the Toffees’ determination to improve their squad depth and quality is clear.
