The New York Knicks aren’t too far away from beginning their title defense. Their incredible run to an NBA Finals title was one for the ages, as they finally brought their faithful fans a long-awaited championship.
The Knicks’ quest for a repeat will begin on Oct. 20 when they host LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers. It isn’t uncommon for tickets to a matchup like this to be pricey, especially with New York preparing to raise its championship banner. However, the Knicks had a clerical error that made the price… a bit unreasonable.
A recent report by Front Office Sports indicates that the Knicks ticket office had a mistaken set of listings that drove the average price up significantly. However, the organization is making it right and providing partial refunds to purchasers.
“It was a ‘mistake’ that individual Knicks tickets for the season opener went on sale for an average of $2,500, and customers will receive partial refunds, the team said.” Ben Horney reported on X.
Costly error?
There’s no doubt New York fans are among the most loyal in sports. However, it was certainly a costly mistake to make, as the franchise had to refund a significant amount of money to make things right.
The timing also makes the situation understandable from a demand perspective. The Knicks are coming off one of the most memorable seasons in franchise history, finally ending a 53-year championship drought. New York went 4-0 against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals before defeating Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 in the NBA Finals.
The Finals provided plenty of drama. The Knicks overcame double-digit deficits in all five games, including a historic 29-point comeback in Game 4. Jalen Brunson then scored a series-high 45 points in Game 5 to secure the championship and earn Finals MVP honors.
Now, New York enters the 2026-27 season with a different challenge. The Knicks aren’t chasing the championship anymore. They’re defending it, and the excitement surrounding opening night shows just how much the city has been waiting for this moment.
With a championship banner, rings and LeBron James coming to Madison Square Garden, demand was always going to be enormous. The ticketing mistake only made an already expensive night even more costly.
