Red Sox make roster moves, recall righty to start Friday vs. Royals

The Red Sox have made two additional roster moves. They placed righty Justin Slaten on the IL with right elbow inflammation and recalled lefty Cam Booser. The Red Sox’ concern level for Slaten is minimal. They hope he’ll be back July 22 when Boston plays at Colorado.

BOSTON — The Red Sox have recalled righty Cooper Criswell from Triple-A Worcester. He will start against the Royals on Friday.

Boston hosts the first game of a three-game series against Kansas City at 7:10 p.m.

The Red Sox optioned righty Trey Wingenter to Worcester to make room for Criswell. Wingenter was acquired from the Tigers for 2023 sixth round draft pick C.J. Weins this past Saturday. The 30-year-old appeared in one game for Boston, giving up three runs on two hits (one homer) and one walk while striking out one Tuesday against the Athletics.

The 27-year-old Criswell has a 4.15 ERA in 12 outings (11 starts) for Boston this year. This will be his second stint with the major league team. He has dominated at Worcester, posting a 1.40 ERA in five starts there.

Criswell occupied the fifth spot in Boston’s rotation for most of the first half of the season after Garrett Whitlock was lost for the year due to elbow surgery.

“Cooper has done nothing but give us a chance to win games up here and in Worcester,” chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said on the Fenway Rundown podcast earlier this week. “That’s not lost on me. He’s a guy who has had a big impact on what we’ve been able to accomplish in the big leagues and a guy who’s going to continue to have a way to impact our team and find a way to contribute.”
