West Ham want to take a chance on a player in his prime who already failed in the Premier League

Although West Ham have been mostly linked to strikers like Youssef En-Nesyri and Jonathan David this summer as attacking options for new manager Julen Lopetegui, their biggest need could be on the left wing.

West Ham have already made a splash in the summer window by signing former Wolves center back Max Kilman to provide a necessary upgrade to their defense.

Now, West Ham can turn their attention to making attacking additions, and they already have eyes on someone who can step in and compete for starts on the left wing.

According to a report from Dutch outlet De Telegraaf’s Mike Verweij, West Ham are among the clubs interested in signing Ajax star Steven Bergwijn.

West Ham fans may remember Bergwijn as a Premier League player for London rivals Tottenham, as the Dutch forward joined the club in 2019 from PSV after registering two seasons with double-digit assists.

Bergwijn played for Tottenham until 2022 when he moved back the Dutch Eredivise after never really establishing himself with Spurs, only making double-digit starts once in the 2020/21 campaign in what proved to be an underwhelming season.

Now 26, Bergwijn has reestablished himself as one of the best attacking players in the Netherlands for Ajax, scoring 12 goals in both of the last two seasons.

West Ham aren’t the only notable club interested in the Dutch left winger, as Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille are involved, as well as the unsurprising Saudi Arabian crowd.

Bergwijn could cost just 21-25 million euros, but even that is a substantial fee for West Ham, considering they could use that money to sign a different starting-caliber forward.

While Bergwijn is a good player at a position of need in his prime and had two good seasons with Ajax, Premier League clubs should be looking for a player to have out-of-this-world numbers in the Netherlands in order to feel comfortable about them succeeding in the Premier League.

Bergwijn did not have a strong track record of success at Tottenham, and, therefore, West Ham must realize he comes with a buyer beware tag.
