Former Mag returns to help out Newcastle after Toon suffer sudden exits

Former Mag Steve Watson has offered a helping hand to Newcastle United after two major departures within our Academy setup this summer.

Watson remains the manager of Darlington and signed a new two-year contract with the National League North side back in April, but the ex-Newcastle defender continues to help behind the scenes on Tyneside and did so again on Sunday.

With Ben Dawson (former U21 boss) leaving for a first-team coaching role at Leicester City last month and Graeme Carrick (former U18 boss) departing earlier this summer to join brother Michael at Middlesbrough, Watson took charge of our second string in a 1-1 draw with South Shields (see photo below).

Watson has been at Darlington since December last year and has enjoyed a casual agreement that allows him to coach at Newcastle’s Academy given his Darlo squad are not yet full-time.

Paul Mitchell is not only overseeing a restructure of our scouting team – along with pursuing first-team targets such as William Osula and Marc Guehi – but has also been tasked to find new managers for our U18 and U21 sides ahead of the new season.

Lee Clark has been linked with the U21 position and is eager to secure a return to his boyhood club. However, it’s not clear if Newcastle will pursue the former Toon midfielder who has put his name forward for the vacant role. Elsewhere, Jack Brazil has arrived from PSV as the new head coach of our U16 side.
