Browns Make QB Decision For First Preseason Game

Last season, the Cleveland Browns were only able to get six games out of star quarterback Deshaun Watson for the second straight year since acquiring a blockbuster trade with the Houston Texans before he went down with a season-ending shoulder injury.

Even though the Browns were still able to endure without Watson leading the way under center or superstar running back Nick Chubb coming out of the backfield, it was obviously a concern for a team that invested so much in upgrading the quarterback position.

Heading into season three of the Watson experiment in Cleveland, head coach Kevin Stefanski and company are going with a cautious approach on how they’ll be handling their star quarterback before they get to their Week 1 showdown against the Dallas Cowboys on September 8.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, Stefanski plans to start veteran newcomer Jameis Winston in the team’s first preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on August 10.

With no decision being made about Watson’s status during the preseason yet, it remains to be seen whether he’ll get any reps in the three games set to be played before Week 1.

Considering Watson’s injury history, the Browns would be wise to hold him out until the games start counting in the regular season since Cleveland is viewed as a team that could be a legitimate Super Bowl title contender in the AFC during the 2024 campaign.

Along with taking on the Packers in their first preseason game, they’ll also face the Minnesota Vikings at home and the Seattle Seahawks on the road.
