Enzo Barrenechea will reportedly now not be leaving Aston Villa on loan as the club intervened to rule out a move to Valencia at the last minute.
Yesterday it appeared almost certain the club’s summer signing would be on the move again, this time to La Liga outfit Valencia. The Spaniards had registered their loan interest ahead of Italian clubs intent on bringing the midfielder back to Serie A to gain experience, much like fellow Juve recruit Samuel Iling-Junior did when signing a year-long deal with Bologna earlier in the week.
However despite reports of a deal being struck, this was in fact not the case, state The Athletic. Talks had taken place but were ultimately postponed when Villa decided against a loan switch for the Argentine.
The reason for sending the 23-year-old out would have been to gain much-needed experience. His season-long spell at Frosinone in Italy remains his only full time playing at the top level to date. Competition for a midfield place in Unai Emery’s squad will prove tough to win, evidenced by his lack of involvement in the opening weeks of the season, but Spanish reporter Hector Gomez puts the U-turn down to injuries in the West Midlands.
Barrenechea had featured in 202 minutes of pre-season football after signing. When asked about the midfielder, who joined as part of a €22m package alongside Iling-Junior, last week Emery responded: “He’s working very well. He has big potential and his process is here with us. I am happy with him. His adaptation in the squad is fantastic.”
Alternatively Villa are seeking to move Leander Dendoncker on before the 11pm deadline on Friday. The Athletic again reported options are being explored whilst another La Liga club, Las Palmas, have made a new loan inquiry. They however would likely be unable to cover the Belgian’s full wage.
