Unai Emery has dedicated Aston Villa’s 3-0 win over BSC Young Boys in the Champions League to club legend Gary Shaw, who sadly passed away earlier this week.
Shaw had been in a serious condition in hospital after suffering a head injury as the result of a fall. He won the Division One title in 1981 before also playing a key role in Villa’s European triumph a year later, making a total of 213 appearances and scoring 79 goals in claret and blue.
“Of course, we tried to follow 42 years ago when they achieved the last victory in the Champions League winning the trophy,” Emery said in his post-match press conference.
“We want to dedicate this victory to Gary Shaw, his family and all the supporters of Aston Villa. We are going to try and get in our way following in that moment what they achieved.”
Villa players wore black armbands in memory of Shaw and fans were chanting his name throughout the match. Young Boys also held an applause for the former striker before kick-off.
Emery’s side opened the scoring in the 27th minute through Youri Tielemans before Jacob Ramsey doubled the lead over 10 minutes later. Both Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran saw goals ruled out for handballs by VAR.
Amadou Onana scored Villa’s third of the game by slamming the ball past Young Boys goalkeeper David von Ballmoos from distance.
