Steelers’ Mike Tomlin on Russell Wilson’s ‘Starting Position’

The Pittsburgh Steelers prepare for a tough matchup against the undefeated Los Angeles Chargers in week 3, while much of their success can be attributed to a dominant defense, quarterback Justin Fields has quietly managed the offense, avoiding turnovers and making timely plays.

However, head coach Mike Tomlin’s decision regarding the starting quarterback may soon become more complicated with Russell Wilson nearing a return from a calf injury.

Fields, who joined the Steelers from the Chicago Bears in the offseason, has completed 30 of 43 passes for 273 yards and one touchdown through the first two games, earning a passer rating of 94.4.

He’s also contributed on the ground, rushing for 84 yards on 22 carries. His efficiency and poise have helped guide Pittsburgh to victories, but there’s growing speculation about whether Fields will retain the starting role once Wilson is healthy.

Russell Wilson, acquired from the Denver Broncos in the offseason, was expected to be the Steelers’ starting quarterback heading into the season. However, a lingering calf injury has kept him sidelined for the first two games.

Tomlin addressed the ongoing quarterback situation, explaining that Wilson’s health and ability to execute the team’s game plan would be key in determining when he returns to action.

“The medical staff component of it is centered around his health and his ability to protect himself,” Tomlin said. “The coach component of the decision is centered around his ability to be productive, to not be limited schematically.”

For now, Fields remains under center as the Steelers prepare for their Week 3 game against the Chargers. The matchup will be Fields’ toughest test so far, with a formidable Chargers defense aiming to disrupt Pittsburgh’s offense.

If Fields continues to perform well, Tomlin may face a difficult decision when Wilson is fully cleared to play.

As the Steelers move forward, Tomlin’s balancing act between the success of his current starter and the potential of Wilson will be a storyline to watch.

If Fields can lead Pittsburgh to another win, he may just force Tomlin’s hand to keep him in the starting role, despite Wilson’s expected return.
