Alan Shearer has spotted something strange about ‘electric’ Newcastle United star

The Three Lions have qualified for the knockout stages of the competition but all optimism and hope around ‘football coming home’ has dwindled.

An unconvincing 1-0 win over Serbia was followed by an even duller draw with Denmark in which Gareth Southgate’s side looked lost and unorganised.

With a star-studded bench at his disposal, fans are demanding changes to England‘s lineup when they face Slovenia on Tuesday evening.

Concerns have been raised around Phil Foden‘s role in the side with the Manchester City star yet to replicate his form from the latest Premier League season.

Even England teammate John Stones believes Foden would love a central role in the team which would subsequently free up a spot for Anthony Gordon to play on the left.

Alan Shearer makes Anthony Gordon observation

Despite England’s clear fragilities on the left, Gordon is yet to be given his chance in the side – even as a substitute.

Speaking on the Rest is Football Podcast, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards discussed Gordon’s lack of time with the Newcastle United legend pointing out that the 23-year-old has not even been warming up on the sidelines.

“On the left-hand side we have been screaming out for pace so I would go for Gordon – I would play him in his natural position where he has played for Newcastle this season where he has been electric and in great form,” Richards said.

Shearer then interjected to make a point about Gordon and Cole Palmer: “Him [Palmer] or Gordon, I haven’t even seen them warming up to be honest.”

Richards agreed with the point, adding “That is the strange thing. That is strange.”

Anthony Gordon for England at Euro 2024

It would be a disaster if England end their Euros campaign without Gordon stepping foot on the pitch.

He was so often the spark of creativity in Newcastle’s front three last season and he ended the campaign with 11 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League.

Southgate has so far opted to shoehorn both Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden into his midfield but it is an experiment that has been tried and failed.

Gordon offers something different to every other England option on the table – an energetic runner who will make dangerous runs in behind.

Even if Gordon is not thrown directly into the starting lineup, he has done more than enough to warrant an appearance from the bench.
