Alex Ovechkin Fires Back at Former Goalie Who Never Allowed a Goal Against Him

Alex Ovechkin became the all-time scoring champion of the NHL on Sunday.

No. 8 scored goal No. 895 in a 4-1 loss to the New York Islanders, but the game felt more like winning a championship for the Washington Capitals than anything.

The goal was scored on New York Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin, who had never let up a goal against Ovechkin before.

There are only 28 goaltenders left – whether retired or active – that have played against Ovechkin at one point in his 20-season NHL career and have not allowed a goal against him.

To commemorate those goalies, Budweiser sent a special gift to all 28 of them that were cans reading, “ZERO of 895.”

Former NHL goaltender Curtis Joseph made the list and posted a picture with him holding the Budweiser box on X. “Congrats to the greatest goal scorer of all time ⁦@ovi8,” Joseph said. “Feeling very lucky to have NOT been a part of it! 2 shots, 0 goals.”

Ovechkin, who is preparing to play the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday as the Capitals zone in on the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, fired back promptly at Joseph.

“Thx u!! I probably score goal on next shot but u retired !!” Ovechkin wrote in reply.

The two only played against each other one time in March 2009. Joseph was 41 and nearing the end of his 19-year NHL career while Ovechkin was 24.

The Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender hadn’t started the game; he came in to relieve the starter Martin Gerber, who allowed a goal to Ovechkin beforehand and left due to a game misconduct.

Joseph faced two shots on Ovechkin in just under six minutes of ice time. He stopped them both.
