Alex Ovechkin is one huge tally closer to breaking the NHL goals record after finding paydirt against the Carolina Hurricanes.
While the Capitals were on a five-on-three power play, Ovechkin blasted an 89 MPH one-timer from the top of the left circle past Hurricanes’ goaltender Frederik Andersen.
The tally, that beat Andersen far side, was Ovechkin’s 892nd career goal, bringing him to within 2 of tying Wayne Gretzky’s high-water mark of 894 and 3 away from solely owning the NHL goals record.
The tally was Ovechkin’s 39th of the season, and came with 35 seconds remaining in the second period to make the score 4-1 Hurricanes. Jakob Chychrun and Dylan Strome registered the assists.
Ovechkin is now on pace tie Gretzky on April 10 vs Carolina and break the record on April 12 at Columbus.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman was at Lenovo Center for the game and was joined in the traveling party by Capitals owner Ted Leonsis and Ovechkin’s wife Nastya Ovechkina.

The goal marked the tenth time Ovechkin has scored on Andersen and the 52nd time he’s scored on the Hurricanes franchise.
Ovi is on a three-game goal streak and 6 in his last 9.
And then there were three.
The #Gr8Chase is now a hat trick away from coming to fruition after Alex Ovechkin scored career goal No. 892. The @Capitals captain’s 39 goals this season are the most by a player age 39+ in more than 55 years.#NHLStats: https://t.co/pryPIamL59 pic.twitter.com/ZbM90n2Wgz
