Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin broke Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record on Sunday, and just two days later, it seems he finally found the time to make a social network comeback.
On Tuesday, Ovechkin decided to break his years-long silence and, after scoring his 895th career NHL goal against Ilya Sorokin to pass Gretzky’s legendary mark of 894, the 39-year-old Capitals captain returned to X for the first time since 2022.
Ovechkin’s target was Curtis “Cujo” Joseph, one of just 28 goaltenders who faced Ovechkin but never surrendered a goal.
Joseph, a three-time Vezina Trophy finalist, had posted his own tongue-in-cheek message after receiving a commemorative Budweiser beer can celebrating his clean sheet against Ovechkin.
Thx u!! I probably score goal on next shot but u retired !!

“Congrats to the greatest goal scorer of all time @ovi8. Feeling very lucky to have NOT been a part of it! 2 shots, 0 goals,” Joseph wrote.
Ovechkin’s reply came quickly: “Thx u!! I probably score goal on next shot but u retired !!”
It was Ovechkin’s first original post since 2022, when he shouted out fellow Russian Kirill Kaprizov, and his first appearance on X after reposting a message in Oct. 2024 for promotional purposes.
The playful exchange capped a milestone moment that saw Ovechkin beat Sorokin on the power play for his 42nd goal of the season-third-most in the league.
The goal made Sorokin the 183rd goaltender Ovechkin has scored against.
Budweiser’s “Kings of Zero” campaign honored the 28 goalies who shut out Ovechkin across their careers and added a viral twist to the celebrations, even though Ovechkin still found a way to chirp his foe.
