Aston Villa’s Champions League squad has been confirmed by UEFA as they prepare to compete at European football’s top table for the first time in over 40 years. Villa kick off their campaign with a trip to Young Boys in Switzerland on 17 September, before they welcome German giants Bayern Munich in their first home bout on 2 October.
They will then welcome Bologna, head to Club Brugge, entertain Juventus, travel to RB Leipzig and Monaco before hosting Celtic – all before the end of January. Those eight matches will determine whether or not they make it through the next round of the competition or bow out entirely, with the Europa League safety blanket removed this season.
Like with the Premier League, following the closure of the transfer window – something Villa must do before they welcome Everton to Villa Park on the weekend after the current international break – they have also had to submit their squad for the Champions League first round phase.
There are two lists – List A is made up of senior players over the age of 21 and you can name as many as 25 in this pool. Of the 25, eight must be homegrown. List B, meanwhile, is made up of youngsters, who must be born after 1 January, 2003. There is an unlimited number of spots on this list for Villa to utilise.
