Bassey sets unwanted PL record after Bruno Guimaraes’ last-minute goal for Newcastle

For all the praise Calvin Bassey received from manager Marco Silva ahead of Fulham’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United, things did not go as planned for the Nigeria international at St James’ Park, sportextra.co.uk reports.

Silva spoke highly of Bassey before the trip to Newcastle, describing him as the most agile and quickest center-back in his team, but things went wrong for him during the game.

According to football statistics website WhoScored, the left-footed center-back committed two errors leading to goals during Fulham’s 2–1 defeat to the Magpies, the most by any player in a single Premier League game this season.

Bassey’s first costly mistake came in the 18th minute when he was dispossessed under pressure by Super Eagles target Jacob Murphy, who drove into the box and fired a low shot in off the base of the post to open the scoring for Newcastle United.

Despite being named Fulham’s Player of the Season for the 2024-25 campaign, Bassey endured what was arguably his poorest performance since his Premier League debut.

His misplaced pass late in the game led directly to Bruno Guimarães’ last-minute winner.

After Anthony Elanga intercepted Bassey’s errant pass, he found William Osula, who charged into the box and aimed for the bottom corner.

Goalkeeper Bernd Leno managed to parry the shot, but Guimaraes reacted quickest to tap in the rebound, sealing victory for the hosts.

After nine rounds of Premier League matches, Bassey now ranks among the most error-prone players in the division, alongside Emmanuel Agbadou (Wolves), Jean-Ricner Bellegarde (Wolves), and Matz Sels (Nottingham Forest), each making two errors leading to goals this season.
