Boston Celtics Head Coach Joe Mazzulla Gives Oddly Specific Answer When Asked What His Role Would Be in a Bank Robbery

If circumstances ever forced Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla to turn to a life of crime, it seems he’d be surprisingly prepared to rob a bank.

Days after winning the NBA Finals, Mazzulla appeared on columnist Zach Lowe’s podcast The Lowe Post. While discussing his days as an assistant coach on the Celtics’ staff, Mazzulla revealed that he used to watch the 2010 crime thriller The Town — which is set in Boston — several times a week. Because of this, he’s now unable to look at Fenway Park without thinking of how he’d get away with a heist of his own.

A curious Lowe asked Mazzulla what role he had in mind for a hypothetical heist. Naturally, it’s something that has a ton of overlap with head coaching.

“I wanna plan the whole thing, like attention to detail,” Mazzulla said. “Find the people that you know whose personalities and characteristics work for each positioning that you need. It’s all about the preparation. I think once you’re in that moment, you have to rely on your preparation — similar to a game — so I would like to be that guy that plans and hires the people [to] set it in motion, or the guy that has to have steady hands, control his breathing to execute the safe.”
