Newcastle United announced the signing of Yoane Wissa from Brentford on Monday night, but the Bees appeared far from pleased.
The deal came three hours after the transfer window closed, and there was fear it may not have even been completed in time.
Newcastle United submitted a deal sheet to sign Yoane Wissa, with details being formalised after the 7pm deadline on Monday evening. The 28-year-old had been spotted at the training ground and a local hospital throughout the day, but the announcement was nowhere to be seen.
It was reported that Newcastle completed the deal for Wissa with 30 seconds to spare, avoiding a potential deadline day disaster on Tyneside.
Wissa shared his delight at signing for Newcastle, but the statement from his now former club was incredibly vague.
Brentford did not thank Yoane Wissa in their transfer statement
Newcastle released a blunt statement regarding Alexander Isak, and Brentford followed suit when they confirmed the departure of Wissa.
Like Newcastle with Isak, Brentford had major internal trouble with Wissa. The forward made it clear he wanted to leave the club after learning about interest from the Magpies, and has not played in the 2025/26 season because of it.
On Sunday, Wissa released his own statement asking to leave Brentford, a request which was finally granted on deadline day. However, the damage had been done, and Wissa left Brentford without any thanks from his former club.
“Yoane Wissa has joined Newcastle United for an undisclosed fee,” the statement read on Brentford’s website.
“The forward signed from French club Lorient in August 2021 and scored 49 goals in 149 appearances for Brentford.
“In his first season, Wissa scored 10 goals in all competitions and then added another seven in 2022/23.
“Wissa missed part of the 2023/24 campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations with DR Congo, where his nation were beaten by South Africa on penalties in the third-place play-off, but hit his best patch of form in a Brentford shirt on his return.
“Wissa ended that season with a run of eight goals and two assists in 15 games helping him to become the Bees’ top scorer.
“During the 2024/25 campaign Wissa became the club’s record Premier League goalscorer (45), surpassing Ivan Toney’s previous record of 36. He ended the season with 19 top-flight goals.”
Yoane Wissa’s message to Brentford after Newcastle United switch
Isak and Wissa’s transfer sagas have been similar, though the former’s is a lot more difficult to understand. Either way, both players have secured the moves they were hoping to, though it has cost them their reputations at Newcastle and Brentford, respectively.
The Sweden international shared a post on Instagram late on Monday evening celebrating his move to Liverpool, but made no mention of Newcastle there or in his first interview with his new club.
It was a completely different case with Wissa, who sent a heartfelt message to the Brentford fans.

“See you soon,” he said on Instagram.
“Love and respect will always be there from me. Thank you. Wiss.”
No matter what the Brentford fans think about him, at least he tried to quell the ongoing drama between him and the club.
