Calls Mount for AFC Team to Trade for Bryce Young After Monday’s Announcement

Just one day after Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales showed support for former top pick Bryce Young, it was reported on Monday that Young was being benched.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Panthers will turn to veteran quarterback Andy Dalton in place of Young.

The 23-year-old second-year quarterback out of Alabama had gotten off to a rough start to the 2024 season. He had thrown for just 245 yards in two games with no touchdowns to three interceptions as the Panthers quickly fell to 0-2 on the year.

While many fans aren’t entirely shocked by the move, being that Young struggled tremendously in his rookie year this past season, plenty of fans think he deserves another shot. Following the report that he had lost his starting job, the app formerly known as Twitter was flooded with posts imploring the Miami Dolphins to make a move for Young.

“My main reaction to the Panthers benching Bryce Young is the Miami Dolphins need to make the phone call. Give Mike McDaniel a chance to make it work while the Tua situation plays out. It is possible the Panthers ask for WAY TOO much, but the phone call should be made,” commented one fan.

“Idk how much Bryce Young would cost, but i would 100% be calling the panthers if I’m Miami. There’s no expectation to start Bryce at all, and I am 100% in on him as a developmental piece with way more upside than Miami’s backup situation,” wrote one user.

“I say this only half joking: the Miami Dolphins should trade for Bryce Young like the Sam Howell trade,” added another.

“Bryce Young to the Dolphins for a conditional 6th round pick,” suggested another.

“Bryce Young YOU are a Miami dolphin,” wrote another.

The calls for Young to go to Miami stem from the fact that the Dolphins’ starting quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, suffered a concussion after a scary hit in their Thursday loss to the Buffalo Bills. According to ESPN, his latest concussion marks his fourth confirmed one in the past five years.

While Tagovailoa has already made his decision and won’t be retiring, it is still unclear how much time he will miss. When head coach Mike McDaniel was asked about a timeline for Tagovailoa, he revealed he had “zero idea” and that he didn’t want to put pressure on him.

As it stands right now, the Dolphins are set to start Skylar Thompson in his place, and recently signed Tyler Huntley off of the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad.

If they do make a move for Young, it would be quite the project. After being taken with the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL draft by the Panthers, Young played for three different head coaches across two years. In that span, the team posted a 2-16 record, while Young threw for 11 touchdowns to 13 interceptions.

However, a change of scenery combined with the fact that McDaniel is an elite offensive mind could be something that saves his career if it happens.
