Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Darius Garland was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for week three, per the NBA’s official press release. This is the second time that Garland has won Player of the Week in his career, and the second-straight time a Cavalier has taken home the award to start the season. It’s no coincidence, the Cavs are 11-0 to begin the season.
For games from November 4 through November 10, Garland averaged a team-best 25 points per game on 61.7% shooting and 57.6% shooting beyond the three-point line.
Garland poured in 39 points and dished eight assists on November 4th against the Milwaukee Bucks, leading the Cavs’ to a thrilling 116-114 win. He followed that up with a near double-double against the New Orleans Pelicans (14 points, nine assists) and then a 27-point outburst against the Golden State Warriors, the latter being a drubbing in Cleveland. To round out the week, Garland led a fourth-quarter rally to lead the Cavs to a victory over the Brooklyn Nets. In that game, Garland once again had an uber-efficient night shooting the basketball (8-11) and he tied Kyrie Irving for the fourth-most three-pointers in Cavaliers history.
Garland has rediscovered his shooting after a down season last year, and the Cavs are benefiting tremendously from it. While Evan Mobley and Donovan Mitchell get the big headlines, Garland has quietly (until now, being honored with an award) been excellent. After an offseason of trade chatter, the Cavs’ front office look like geniuses for sticking with Garland and helping him get back to All-Star form.
