The Maine Celtics kick off their season on Friday night and they will have plenty of reinforcements from the big club. Boston announced on Tuesday they are assigned rookie first-round pick Baylor Scheierman to the G-League along with two-way players JD Davison, Drew Peterson and Anton Watson.
Scheierman has seen limited action in Boston’s 7-1 start to the year after being selected No. 30 overall in the 2024 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-6 wing struggled with his shot during the preseason, knocking down just 17.6 percent of his attempts for the field. He was expected to potentially challenge for a rotation spot early on nights when Boston was shorthanded but was beaten out by Jordan Walsh for that role.
Scheierman instead has seen spot minutes in three blowout games to begin the year but has gotten on the board with three points over his first 18 NBA minutes. With so few limited playing and practice opportunities amid a busy start to the season for the Celtics, Scheierman stands to benefit greatly from increased reps in Maine alongside the team’s two-way players. Without Scheierman and Boston’s two-way players in uniform, the Celtics will have just 12 players dressed for Wednesday’s game against the Warriors.
Watson, Peterson and Davison have already spent significant time practicing with the Maine squad during training camp and will spend most of their season with the team barring injuries. Each two-way player is eligible to appear in 50 NBA games.
The Maine Celtics open their season in New York on Friday night with a matchup against the Long Island Nets.
