Jayson Tatum has been aggressively rehabbing from a torn Achilles and has hopes to return at some point this season.
The Celtics haven’t put an official timetable on the star forward. And while an Achilles injury normally sidelines someone for about a year, Boston is “cautiously optimistic” about the possibility of Tatum returning to the lineup this season.
“The Celtics haven’t ruled out Jayson Tatum for the season and they’re cautiously optimistic,” ESPN’s Shams Charania said on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “He has a goal in mind that he wants to play this season, and we’ll see if he gets there.”
Charania noted there are several clearances that Tatum needs from doctors as he gots closer to the end of his rehab.
Tatum ruptured his Achilles in May in the second round of the NBA Playoffs against the New York Knicks. The star forward underwent surgery within 18 hours.
While it’s unclear when he’ll return, Tatum didn’t rule out the possibility of playing in the 2025-26 season.
“Whenever that date is, it will be a home game in front of the fans at TD Garden,” he told ESPN. “That is something that I have dreamed about.”
The Celtics, whether Tatum returns, will look much different going into 2025-26. They traded Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, Luke Kornet signed with the San Antonio Spurs and Al Horford left Boston for the Golden State Warriors.
