Celtics waive 7-foot-1 center as roster moves continue

The Celtics continue to get some housekeeping done when it comes to their roster. Dmytro Skapintsev, the 7-foot-1 center, was waived by the team, according to the NBA’s transactions log. Skapintsev was on an Exhibit 10 contract and he’ll likely end up with the G League Maine Celtics for the season.

The C‘s needed to make a spot on the roster for recently-signed local product Hason Ward, who’s also on an Exhibit 10 deal. The C‘s will cut down their offseason roster further in the coming days ahead of next Tuesday’s regular-season opener against the Knicks.

Skapintsev, 26, went undrafted in 2020 before spending the last two seasons within the Knicks organization. He mostly played for the G League Westchester Knicks, averaging 5.9 points and 4.3 rebounds in 13 games for them last year. Skapintsev was also briefly on a two-way deal for the Knicks last season, appearing in two NBA games in his career.

The Celtics will now keep Skapintsev around as part of their organization. He has size, which could be important down the line for big man insurance purposes. Since he was on an Exhibit 10 deal, he gets a $77,500 bonus if he stays in Maine for at least 60 days. Skapintsev appeared in three preseason games for the Celtics coming off the bench. Now, he’ll likely get a chance to stick around with the Maine Celtics.
