Chelsea vs Fulham referee: Official in charge and his record for both clubs

Robert Jones will referee Saturday’s Premier League west London derby between Chelsea and Fulham at Stamford Bridge. It’s his first time officiating this fixture

Chelsea have taken four points from their opening two Premier League games so far this season, both being London derbies. Fulham are also unbeaten, but they’ve drawn both of their two matches.

Jones is getting his second Premier League match of the season, having overseen Sunderland’s 3-0 win over West Ham United on matchday one. He showed just one yellow card during that game, but awarded 18 fouls, the most fouls per card of any referee in the league this season.

Chelsea fans won’t forget the four penalties Jones has awarded against them, while Fulham have lost more than half of their matches with him in the middle.

Jones has officiated 11 Chelsea games since making his refereeing debut, with five coming in the 2022-23 campaign. Chelsea lost four of those matches, including one in the FA Cup third round against Manchester City. Man City were awarded two penalties during that game, both scored.

But the four defeats in a row had very little to do with Jones, he had just caught Chelsea in a bad season. Despite the two penalties, Jones showed Chelsea just one yellow card — compared to three for Man City.

Chelsea are now unbeaten in their past six games with Jones as referee, drawing four and winning two. They drew both of their matches last season, with a penalty being awarded against them in both. Jones has shown Chelsea at least two yellow cards in eight of his 11 matches. But he’s yet to send a Chelsea player off.

Jones has taken charge of 17 of Fulham’s matches, across the Championship, Premier League and Carabao Cup. His first four league matches in the middle for Fulham were all in the Championship, as he was just starting out.

There’s something about Jones and Fulham that just don’t mix. He’s shown at least three yellow cards to the Cottagers six times, including four in a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa last season.

But he has also awarded Fulham three penalties, compared to two going against them. Both of the penalties against game in Fulham’s 5-3 Premier League win over Leicester City in 2022-23. He showed Fulham no yellow cards during that match.
