Although the Kansas City Chiefs are 3-0, quarterback Patrick Mahomes is displeased with his play. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid indicated he’s being too critical of himself.
Following a 22-17 Week 3 win over the Atlanta Falcons, Mahomes told the media, “I feel like I haven’t played well.” He tossed two touchdowns during the victory and threw an interception to Falcons safety Justin Simmons. Mahomes is tied for the league’s third-most picks (four) through three starts.

In his Monday news conference, Reid signaled he’s not worried about Mahomes’ interceptions and plans to adjust his play calling to help the QB find his groove.
“He’s a phenomenal player,” Reid said. “And I thought he kind of got in rhythm in the second half. A lot of that is my responsibility to get him in that rhythm earlier. And so, we’ll go back, discuss all that, and get that taken care of.”
The Chiefs are tied with the Green Bay Packers (2-1) for sixth in the league in points scored (25 PPG). However, Mahomes has averaged a career-low 219.7 passing yards per game.
Outside of second-year wide receiver Rashee Rice — who leads the team in receiving yards (288) and receptions (24) through three games — KC’s still looking for targets who consistently make big plays.
Rookie WR Xavier Worthy is second on the team in yards per reception (13.5) but only has six receptions for 81 yards and one TD catch in three games. Star tight end Travis Kelce, meanwhile, has averaged a career-low 23 receiving yards per game. WR Marquise Brown (shoulder) was recently placed on injured reserve.
The receiving corps’ problems probably prevent Mahomes from pushing the ball downfield. Per Pro Football Reference, he has averaged 3.2 air yards per completion, tied for the second-lowest mark in the league.
The Chiefs have plenty of time to fix these issues, and Mahomes shouldn’t beat himself up. He’s one reason KC could win its third consecutive Super Bowl this season.
