‘Continuity gives stability’ – Fulham coach explains surgical transfer approach

Fulham assistant coach Gonçalo Santos believes stability has been key to the club’s consistency in the Premier League.

Speaking to Bola na Rede, the Portuguese coach said that keeping “around 90%” of last season’s squad allowed the team to stay competitive without heavy spending.

He explained that the club was “surgical” in the market, choosing to make few but precise additions rather than overhaul the group. “Continuity gives stability to the club, to the staff, and to the players, who already know the manager’s ideas,” Santos noted.

Daily intensity defines Fulham’s players

Asked which player had surprised him most, Santos refused to single anyone out, praising instead the group’s collective work ethic. The Premier League’s intensity, he said, is what truly sets it apart. “You only realise it when you live it,” he admitted. “Even when you’re winning 2-0 in the 80th minute, the game is never over.”

According to Santos, Fulham’s players have impressed not only with their quality but with their “daily application and competitiveness”, traits that keep them sharp week after week.

Jiménez’s experience and Kevin’s promise

Santos praised Raúl Jiménez for his leadership and resilience, describing him as “a player perfectly adapted to the Premier League” and “a huge asset” to Fulham. The Mexican striker, now one of the league’s most experienced foreign forwards, continues to provide goals and stability for the side.

He also spoke about Kevin, the young summer signing once linked to Sporting. The coach said the winger is still adapting to English football but has “enormous potential” and could become “one of the pleasant surprises of the season.”

Following Willian’s example

Comparisons between Kevin and former Fulham winger Willian have already surfaced, and Santos sees it as a compliment. He described Willian as “a legend” who set a standard for excellence, adding that Kevin is “still learning the language, the rhythm, and the culture,” but has what it takes to succeed.

For Santos, that blend of experience and youth is exactly what keeps Fulham evolving without losing its identity. A team built on effort, understanding, and belief in Marco Silva’s project.
