Draymond Green Admits ‘A Part of Me Wanted’ Klay Thompson to Leave

Even months before his decision to leave the Golden State Warriors, Klay Thompson already hinted that playing for the Dubs, especially in the past couple of seasons, had taken its toll on him. According to the five-time All-Star, his free agency decision was going to be heavily influenced by his mental health, which apparently, was already struggling during the latter part of his tenure in Golden State.

Apparently, this is exactly why Draymond Green wanted Thompson to leave.

Draymond Green Knew Klay Thompson Had to Go

Green has already confessed that he shed a few tears when Thompson told him about his decision to move on. However, the former Defensive Player of the Year also admitted that he knew deep down that this was the right decision for his now-former teammate. So much so, that Draymond actually wanted Klay to leave:
“I do know the joy that basketball brings him and like it brought sadness, it brought unhappiness last year for him,” Green said on a frecent episode of hi podcast. “If you ever care about someone’s well-being … the number one goal for that person is to see them happy and enjoying what they do because you care about their well-being. A part of me wanted Klay to leave. And not wanting him to leave in the sense of like, want him to leave, but want him to leave because you only want to see him be the guy that you know he is.”

Green attests that Thompson was no longer happy with the Warriors and that Klay’s mental health could have possibly taken a turn for the worse if he did not get a fresh start elsewhere. Naturally, Green would have loved to see out his career with Thompson in the Bay Area, but as a friend, Dray knew that time had run out for Klay in Golden State.
