Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is keen to sign a right-sided centre-back this summer, and the hope is that it will be Marc Guehi.
The Magpies are in talks to sign the 24-year-old, with Marc Guehi keen to join Newcastle United.
Newcastle’s opening Guehi bid has been rejected by Crystal Palace, but a second one should be on the way. There appears to be confidence that a deal can be done, with Newcastle hoping to make progress with the Guehi transfer by the start of next week.
It would be a statement of intent from the Toon owners, as PIF prepare to potentially break the club’s transfer record once again. They did that in 2022 when Alexander Isak became Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever, costing £63million from Real Sociedad.
A deal for Guehi could eclipse that figure, as Newcastle aim to snap up England’s star performer at Euro 2024.
Eddie Howe is asked about Marc Guehi
But while the rumour mill suggests that Newcastle’s deal to sign Guehi is heading in the right direction, Eddie Howe has refused to provide an update on the Magpies’ pursuit of the defender.
Howe has spoke to the media ahead of Newcastle’s friendlies against Girona and Stade Brestois, and was asked about the club’s rumoured interest in Guehi.
“I’m able to give you nothing on that,” Howe said, as reported by the Chronicle.
Silence is golden for Howe as Newcastle aim to strike deal
Howe has not taken the opportunity to comment on Newcastle’s interest in Guehi. He is keeping his cards close to his chest, which is no surprise. He never normally comments on transfer rumours.
However, he did do that earlier in the summer when Newcastle fans were unaware of the club’s interest in Guehi. Before he was the top target, it looked like Malick Thiaw was heading to Tyneside.
The Newcastle boss was asked about this out in Japan, and Howe was very complimentary towards Thiaw. It came as a shock, as it was a change of approach from Howe. It suggested that a deal was progressing, otherwise why would Howe willingly speak so positively about the 22-year-old.
But that was not the situation. Instead, Newcastle were actually already working on a deal to sign Guehi.
He is the number one target, and the hope is that he arrives at St James’ Park very soon. Fans are extremely excited about his potential arrival, while Crystal Palace are already trying to replace Guehi.
That is good news for Newcastle, even if Howe is not able to comment on a possible move to Tyneside.
