Eddie Howe names £40m as new ‘team captain’ in leadership shake-up

Eddie Howe has rejigged his Newcastle United leadership team going into the new season.

For the past couple of years, Jamaal Lascelles has been the official team captain with Kieran Trippier as vice-captain, despite Lascelles not being a regular starter for the side.

When Lascelles was on the pitch he’d take the armband, but more often it was Kieran Trippier who led the side on the pitch, and beyond those two, Callum Wilson or Dan Burn would don the armband.

On Saturday, though, Bruno Guimaraes led the side out of the tunnel as captain after doing so at St James’ Park as Newcastle took on Brest in the Sela Cup.

Bruno Guimaraes will wear the captain’s armband this season

The Daily Mail has just revealed this evening that Bruno has now been made “Team Captain” meaning he will don the armband this season. Meanwhile, Kieran Trippier has retained his vice-captain role despite being linked with a move away from the club.

Jamaal Lascelles has been given a new title of “Club Captain” while the rest of the leadership group will be made up of Dan Burn, Callum Wilson and Jacob Murphy.

With Lascelles sidelined until the new year after ACL surgery and Trippier no longer seen as a first-choice for the starting XI, it makes sense that Eddie Howe would look to install a new captain this season.

This new role all-but confirms Bruno is going nowhere

Bruno Guimaraes had been the source of many a story this summer suggesting that Newcastle could lose the Brazilian with Manchester City and Arsenal often touted has being interested in the 26-year-old.

We were never really too worried that Bruno would leave as he’s always spoken about his love for the club and his dream to lift a trophy while he’s here, and now the club has bestowed him with the honour of being captain, that suggests that we can rest easy for the rest of this transfer window as Bruno is clearly staying put.

Now the £40 million signing from Lyon has the chance to not only realise his dream of lifting a trophy with the Magpies, but to do so as captain.
