Edwards : ‘I’m proud tonight, but it hurts’

Rob Edwards had mixed emotions come full-time at the Emirates – proud of how his side executed the game plan but frustrated about letting Arsenal win it late on.

After a resolute performance, with plenty of grit and determination, Wolves thought they’d earned a point at the league leaders after Tolu Arokodare equalised late on.

However, a second own goal of the night left the head coach gutted for both his players and the supporters who’d travelled down for an 8pm kick-off, as the wait for a win under Edwards continues.

On deserving more at Arsenal

“The lads gave everything tonight. We’re flat, because the bottom line is we lost another game of football. That’s why Arsenal are where they are, they found a way and we also found a way to help them, I think. I can make all the excuse in the world, I can say it’s Arsenal away and all of that, but we’ve lost the game.

“The lads gave everything. I’m proud of a lot of it tonight, but it hurts. I hate losing games. We all do. We’ve lost far too many, but I think we’re going about it in the right way to try and turn things around. You can see it tonight – there’s a team that’s committed. They’re sticking together, they’re fighting, and I feel for the supporters. A big thank you to them for coming all the way down here and backing us right to the end there. I feel for them, because it’ll be hard for them at the moment.”

On the game plan working

“The plan did work. The lads carried it out really well. We were very disciplined. We obviously can’t open up here, we’d be asking for trouble. So, we were a lot more compact than we were on Monday – different game, different opposition, and it was the right way to go.

“The lads worked hard on it. They believed in it, and we had to wait for our moments to show the courage to get back in it after going 1-0 down. We started pushing, we pressed, we made changes, got back into it, but this is why we are where we are. We’ve got to value stopping the cross. We’ve got to defend the goal, and we’re not doing that well enough.

“They limited Arsenal to quite little, for them. The two goals we conceded are quite bizarre, especially the first one, but to get back in it, to work that hard and show a lot of fight, a lot of spirit, a lot of courage, all the things that we were asking for, things that aren’t in our control, then to lose it very late on hurts.”

On things hopefully turning

“We have to continue to try and do the right thing. The message that we’re trying to do, the stuff we’re trying to live every day and train every single day, we have to keep valuing it, because I know it’s the right thing. I know it’s the right way to go.

“We’ve seen it tonight against the brilliant team. We’re going about it the right way and then you hope things will turn, you hope things will go the right way. It hits the post and goes the other way, and not off our goalkeeper’s head.”

On putting building blocks in place

“I know what we’ve come into is difficult. We’re going the right way about it. It is a positive tonight, apart from the result, we’re in a results business, and that’s why I’m so disappointed in there.

“I’ve told the lads as well, because stuff we spoke about before the game, the basics, stop the cross, defend the cross. We’ve done it for almost 100 minutes. Do it for that last bit, we take something from the game, and we can build on it. That one moment is just going to affect a lot of people’s feelings and thoughts on the on the game as well.

“It’s clear we’re in a difficult moment, but the right thing to do for us train on Monday and learn from the good bits, correct the bits that we continue to keep breaching and look forward to the next game. That’s all we can do, and it’s the right thing to do.”
