The Dallas Cowboys’ turbulent season continued with a 34-10 loss to the Houston Texans at AT&T Stadium, marking their fifth straight home defeat and setting an NFL record. The loss, coupled with growing scrutiny around the team’s leadership, added fuel to a headline-grabbing comparison made by ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith, who likened Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to President Joe Biden.
Smith drew odd parallels between Jones’ public comments and Biden’s much-discussed cognitive abilities, sparking a heated reaction across social media.
“I’m not joking when I say this. I’m getting very, very worried about Jerry Jones,” Smith stated. “The only thing worse than the team’s play is his press conferences or whatever you want to call it. I find myself thinking about Joe Biden before he backed out of running for reelection. I think Jerry’s one month older than President Joe Biden for crying out loud.” said Smith.
“I remember when I was on the airwaves literally 9, 10 months ago. I was like, he ain’t going to be the nominee, he ain’t going to make it to the Democratic National Convention. Ya’ll got to do something to change. I’m looking at Jerry and I find myself asking, ‘Where the (expletive) is Stephen Jones?’ Where the (expletive) are his family members? Somebody in your inner circle has to be able to stop you from adding fuel to the fire,” Smith continued.
While Smith’s comparison draws attention, it fails to account for the reality that Jones, while stubborn and unwavering in his approach, has – to the layman, anyway – shown no signs of cognitive decline. As the Cowboys’ ‘Commander-in-Chief’ since 1989, Jones has remained consistent in his hands-on management style and outspoken leadership. … and often humorously unusual presentation.
His approach has certainly drawn criticism over the years, but it is far from indicative of any mental decline.
The comments come as the Cowboys prepare for a critical Week 12 matchup against the Washington Commanders, led by former Cowboys defensive coordinator and current Commanders head coach Dan Quinn.
While the Cowboys work to regroup from their record-setting loss, the team must also navigate increasing external criticism. A win against a divisional opponent could help stabilize their season and shift the narrative, but the spotlight remains firmly on Jones and the team’s trajectory.
