The Everton board will stick with Sean Dyche despite the looming threat of relegation at Goodison Park, according to Darren Bent.
The Toffees are yet to pick up a point in the Premier League this season and currently sit bottom of the table heading into the September international break, with pressure beginning to mount on Dyche.
With the Blues set to move into their new Bramley Moore Stadium ahead of next season, talkSPORT host Andy Goldstein has been left questioning whether or not the board will run the risk of playing Championship football in their new ground.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Monday (2 September, 18:11) Goldstein said: “Do you think the board will be persuaded to pull the trigger early on Dyche knowing that they’ve got that new stadium to move into and there’s no way they can have Championship football in it?”
Bent replied: “It’s a catch-22 because he’s saved them before. I think they’ll stick with him. They’re 20th now, they finished 15th last season which was quite comfortable and they had the point deductions.
“17th the year before that, 16th the year before that. At some point, if you keep flirting with it, it’s going to get you.”
Will Everton sack Sean Dyche amid Goodison Park developments?
While sections of the Toffees support and some pundits have suggested that time is running out for Dyche at Goodison Park, there has been no word from the top of the club to suggest that he is under any pressure yet.
In fact, the Blues board have backed the former Burnley boss well in the transfer window and refused to budge on their valuation of Jarrad Branthwaite in spite of the fact nobody was willing to meet their asking price.
Those aren’t the actions of a board looking to make a change in the dugout. Of course, it is a results business and should the Toffees continue to struggle, the decision-makers at the club may well have their patience tested.
At the moment however, Bent’s assessment that the Goodison Park hierarchy will stand by Dyche seems to be the most likely outcome.
While that is the case however, Everton will be running the risk of their new stadium being the best in the Championship.
